Representation Analysis
In the first advertisement I watched, it was a tide commercial for a girl who seems to be pretty messy and a bit wreck less. This advertisement made it come off as if though it was a bad thing to not be the stereotypic girl that likes pink and is very neat. It stereotypes the expectations of what a girl should be like and how she should behave. The commercial made the girl appear as an outcast because she seemed to not like pink and wear darker colors. The commercial targeted the stereotype in women that they are not supposed to like cars or anything messy, while the little girl is fascinated by it. Problems with audiences being exposed to such commercials is that, it creates certain standards in society and if you don’t meet up to the expectations, you’re considered an outcast or looked upon as a weird individual. It’s bad because many begin to marginalize and oppress each other for being different. In the second advertisement I watched, it was an axe commercial in which they made a man seem irresistible because of his smell. This commercial created certain stereotypic expectations of women in society. For example, every woman in the video has a skinny body and have similar characteristics, therefore implying that the only way to obtain such beauty, is to fulfill those standards. It also implies that only a man with such masculinity and such looks could obtain beautiful women. Possible effects of people who view these ads is that they may feel forced to live up to or look up to those standards. It may make it seems as if though one type of race, type of body or physical feature is superior to the other. It divides society as a whole, and makes it look as a competition between young women as to who can obtain “natural beauty” expectations.

Horror Movie Genre
1. Horror movie genre
2. Genre conventions- The content one usually finds in horror movies would be scary jump scares. Generally the use of very dark lighting and sometimes an opaque setting, such as fog in the background. A horror film typically tries to target audiences between 15-25. Horror films are typically split into sub genres depending on how grotesque the film is. They use a lot of narrative enigmas to show certain situations in which unnatural occurrences happen. The main purpose is to keep the audience unease and puzzled as to why such unexplained things are occurring. These kinds of techniques are incorporated to keep the audience active in the film therefore, they will try to come up with an explanation to all the paranormal activities occurring. The most common narrative structure among horror films would be good vs evil.
3. Genre conventions- Common production techniques among the horror genre would include sound illusions such as shepards tone. Shepard’s tone is commonly used to keep the audience on the edge of their seat, as they wait for something to appear or pop up on the screen. A shepard’s tone is a never ending combination of sounds that seems as if though the sound is about to reach its highest pitch. Horror films also usually include a haze so the audience can’t really see what’s soon to appear. It helps create curiosity among the viewers. Many horror films also include unique angles to show that the scene is weird or out of the ordinary.
4. Institutional conventions- Horror films are marketed by teasing the monster. This means that the director includes an unnatural presence that is lurking in the film. When marketing the monster, they don’t want to give away as to what it is, but rather just incorporate small details about the figure so the audience will get a general idea as to what’s it about but, will still be left with the curiosity as to what it may be.
5. Film examples-
- The Nun- This film embodies my genre because it includes many of the production techniques that were mentioned. For marketing, they used a clear visual of what exactly the paranormal activity was, but it didn’t offer a full look as to what it could become. The nun is a great example of good vs evil and was even embodied into their marketing. Their chosen thumbnail was a picture of a nun covered in half white and half black being separated by fire. This was a perfect example of both good and evil in one shot.
6.
- Us- This film embodies the horror genre because it includes multiple unique angle shots and various uses of shepard’s tone. Not only was the movie well known for leaving the audience with a vast amount of curiosity but, the marketing helped incorporate puzzling minds. The thumbnail of this movie was the protagonist with a pair of scissors, wearing a red jumpsuit and a completely black background. This kept the audience questioning as to why such choices were made. Moreover, this film is another example of good vs evil. The main characters had to deal with having to battle with themselves that come from almost like a parallel universe.
